A Japanese Entrepreneur Based in the U.S. Receives the Honorary Title of Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) — Using Music and Rhythm to Drive Social Change

ONTSUBU LLC (Virginia, USA) is proud to announce that its Founder & CEO, Miyuki Tani, FRSA, has been awarded the honorary title of Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). This recognition honors her international contributions in bridging music, acoustic science, and social transformation — connecting Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom — as well as her development of healing music designed for neurodiversity.

This award entitles Miyuki Tani to use the post-nominal letters “FRSA” after her name. The nomination was made by Jonva Ven, FRSA (Co-Managing Partner, Slice of Canada Inc.), a music producer, brand strategist, and alumnus of Berklee College of Music.

What Does “Music × Science × Technology” Mean on the Global Stage?

This award recognizes Miyuki Tani’s work as a bridge between Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom — advancing international initiatives in music, acoustic science, and social innovation through research and development.

Sound is becoming a new infrastructure connecting Japan’s industries, culture, and science to the world. Built on a proprietary methodology that integrates music, acoustic science, and engineering, ONTSUBU LLC is advancing collaboration across three key areas:

1. Collaboration with the Entertainment Industry — Strengthening Japan’s Global Brand

Japanese anime, games, and film content are beloved around the world. ONTSUBU’s sound technology implements acoustic design that directly affects emotion and the body, while producing wellbeing-oriented music that promotes relaxation for both mind and body. By embodying Japan’s “ZEN” — its deeply rooted spiritual aesthetic — through cinematic music, ONTSUBU elevates the international brand value of Japanese content.

Japan’s ancient aesthetic of “Ma” (間) — the intentional silence between sounds — is woven into ONTSUBU’s compositions through irregular design. The ensemble felt in the moments of silence creates a deep sense of immersion. Silence functions as part of the music itself.

2. Collaboration in Spatial Sound Design — Sound that Supports Neurodiversity

ONTSUBU’s sound technology is designed to support neurodiversity — creating acoustic environments where individuals with different neurological profiles, sensory sensitivities, and cognitive characteristics can feel safe, focused, and at ease. The effects of sound on brainwaves and cognitive function have been verified through peer-reviewed neuroscience research and proprietary data (N=138). With the economic loss from mental illness estimated at approximately ¥19.2 trillion annually in Japan, ONTSUBU is working to establish internationally standardized evidence — supporting neurodiverse-inclusive environments across offices, hospitals, public facilities, and urban spaces.

*Acoustic stress relief: By precisely layering “deep harmonics” extracted from natural and outdoor acoustic characteristics with solfeggio frequencies at studio master quality, ONTSUBU designs a natural sound layer that the brain does not need to “analyze.” This switches off information processing and guides the listener into a deep state of rest (theta wave dominance) — unconsciously and effortlessly.

3. Collaboration in Acoustic Research × Academia — Bringing Japan’s Technology to the World

Through joint research with universities and institutions across Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom, ONTSUBU aims to establish scientifically grounded international evidence on the effects of “musical rhythm on human beings” — connecting sound science to global policy-making and sustainable economic growth.

The Background Behind the Award — Rhythm Theory Born from 17 Years, 60 Countries, and 100,000 People

As a professional drummer, Miyuki Tani has performed alongside artists across more than 60 countries over 17 years — including a live improvisation session with Chicago Blues Hall of Fame artist Magic Slim and The Teardrops — performing before approximately 100,000 audience members worldwide.

Miyuki also holds the national qualification of Professional Engineer (Urban Planning) in Japan, and has spent 17 years systematizing a unique approach: “analyzing the structure of sound and rhythm through engineering, and implementing it into human emotion, the body, and society.”

Driven by the conviction that “rhythm and groove reach people’s inner world beyond language and culture,” she founded ONTSUBU LLC in Virginia, USA in 2024. She is currently active at the forefront of music × technology × social implementation — including a proposal to the U.S. Library of Congress for an Innovator in Residence position, an application for membership in the GRAMMY Recording Academy, and joint rhythm research with Berklee College of Music Associate Professor David Cowan.

“Music, engineering, and science. As a Japanese individual who has dedicated herself to contributing to sustainable national economic activity and promoting wellbeing through music, I am deeply honored by this recognition. Given the growing challenges surrounding mental health and the fields of music education and sound technology, I believe there is an increasing need for collaboration and co-creation. I will continue to leverage the power of art — where every individual resonates and grows — alongside the advancement of sound technology and science. With our vision of ‘Connect All That Is.’ at the center, I look forward to working together with the global RSA community to build a better future.”

Key Achievements

1. Woven by Fate (2024 — New York Textile Month)

Using century-old recordings of traditional Japanese Kurume Kasuri loom sounds from Fukuoka as source material, Miyuki produced a Lofi Hip-Hop track officially featured in New York Textile Month 2024 — a proof-of-concept for cultural archive × music technology.

2. Commercial Space BGM Adoption

ONTSUBU’s sound design BGM has been officially adopted at the popular head spa “Goku no Kimochi,” the Isetan Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi “Sleepy Land” event, and the PARCO Shinsaibashi VIP Lounge — realizing the commercial implementation of sound wellness.

3. Sound Bath Experience Report for 138 Participants (Japan)

A pilot program recording the perceptual and emotional changes of all participants was conducted in Japan, collecting initial data toward quantifying the effects of sound on the human inner world.

4. Library of Congress Innovator in Residence Proposal (2026)

ONTSUBU submitted a proposal to the U.S. Library of Congress for a browser-based healing music generation app, “The Symphony of Iron and Soul,” utilizing industrial and American Folklife Center archival recordings. Currently under review.

The ONTSUBU Method — Three Proprietary Theories

Sound Particle Theory (ONS)

A theory that treats sound as “particles,” analyzing their effects on space, the body, and emotion through an engineering lens.

Between the Note (BTN)

A rhythm theory systematizing the expression found in the intentional silence between notes. Japan’s aesthetic concept of “Ma” (間) is implemented through acoustic engineering to stimulate the brain’s predictive system and guide listeners into deep states of immersion.

Groove Healing (GH)

A wellness approach combining polyrhythm and spatial audio design. 100% of 138 sound bath participants reported psychophysical changes, with 90.2% reporting a meditative experience.

White Paper Now Available

“An Evidence Report on the Psychophysiological Effects of Groove Healing Music: The Impact of Polyrhythm and Spatial Audio Design on the Autonomic Nervous System, Brainwaves, and Subjective Well-Being”

Proprietary survey data from N=108 sound bath participants was cross-referenced with peer-reviewed neuroscience research, verifying alignment with four neurological mechanisms: dopamine release through polyrhythm, alpha wave induction through solfeggio frequencies, theta wave induction through binaural beats, and beta-endorphin release through groove. Published April 2026.
