CONCEPT —Craft, memory, and the rhythm of time

Sound reaches the brain in just 0.1 seconds, responding faster than vision. If visual logos imprint the eye, groove is the logo of the body—a rhythm the mind continues even after the music stops.

For this project, we were invited to create a sonic identity for an event celebrating Kurume Kasuri, Japan’s historic double-ikat textile tradition. Our goal was to express heritage and contemporary youth culture woven into one—the timeless and the modern meeting through sound.

APPROACH — Weaving loom rhythms into a contemporary groove

For the piece “Woven by Fate”, we transformed the craft itself into music

  • Recorded the sounds of century-old Kurume Kasuri looms
  • Used the loom rhythms as living percussive elements
  • Built a groove inspired by House and Lo-fi—styles familiar to a younger generation
  • Added a gentle piano motif to evoke Japanese elegance and quiet refinement

The result is a sonic identity where the rhythm of the looms becomes the rhythm of the brand—a bridge between Kurume’s factory floors and the New York gallery space.

EXPERIENCE — A sound that reconnects people with heritage

As the track played in the exhibition, guests began asking:

“Are these sounds… from the actual looms?”

That recognition opened a deeper emotional path.
From sound, their thoughts traveled naturally to:

  • the history embedded in each woven piece
  • the unseen labor behind every garment
  • the continuity between Kurume craftspeople and emerging Japanese creators

Here, sound acted as cultural storytelling, stitching together memory, identity, and the future.

Outcome — A new form of VIP hospitality

Staff and collaborators shared that the track filled the room with a warm, nostalgic atmosphere— a sense of pride, lineage, and gentle reverence toward the future of Kurume Kasuri. This project demonstrated how groove-based sound branding for heritage crafts can turn a tactile tradition into a living, emotional, and memorable sonic identity.
