[Interview] Crossing Borders — Miyuki Tani, Interviewed by Tsuyoshi Takashiro
Founder Miyuki Tani is featured in a five-part long-form interview in Ekkyo Suru Shigoto-roku (Cross-Border Work Chronicles), a series in FUTURE REPORT, the mail magazine of the Takashiro Future Research Institute led by Tsuyoshi Takashiro. New installments are released every Friday from September 11, 2026.
Recorded in Barcelona
The interview was recorded in Barcelona, Spain, in August 2026. With Takashiro as interviewer, the conversation runs to about 30,000 Japanese characters.
The series features people whose work does not fit a single title. Tani is introduced as a music producer and professional drummer, and the lead notes three further credentials.

Between Performance and Engineering
The series traces her path from deciding at age nine to devote her life to music to the research she does today.
Drum training that began at nineteen. Infrastructure projects in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Mumbai as an urban planning engineer. Performances at a music festival in Ghana, a five-star hotel in Macau and an international festival in Hue. She talks about how moving between two very different paths, performance and engineering, led to her current research on describing sound through engineering.
The Silent Beat and the Ma Between Sounds
The final installment turns to the themes at the center of ONTSUBU’s research, including the silent beat, the ma between sounds, and the idea of first raising the listener’s perceptual resolution. It also touches on her work with artists in West Africa.
