The Breath of the Loom
Kurume kasuri is a traditional cotton textile from Fukuoka, Japan. It has a history of about 200 years, and its technique has been designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan.
On this album, the sound of a kasuri loom was recorded and used as the hi-hat. The loom can be heard on all seven tracks. On some it keeps time from beginning to end, and on others it appears only in part. The sound was recorded at Sakata Orimono, a Kurume kasuri workshop.
Threads pass back and forth, and the cloth is woven little by little. That repetition closely resembles groove in music. The “breath” in the album title refers to the rhythm the loom keeps.
Tradition, Innovation and Fate
The album’s themes are traditional craft and innovation, and fate.
The sound of handwork plays inside dance and electronic music. The aim is not only to preserve what has been handed down, but to bring it back to life as music of today.
As warp and weft cross to become a single cloth, something is born when people meet people and techniques meet techniques. The third track, “Waven by Fate,” carries that sense of fate in its title.
The Engineering
Along with composition, drums and arrangement, Miyuki Tani handled the recording, mixing, mastering and cover art herself.
The sound of a loom cannot be used as rhythm as it is, because every stroke sounds and resonates differently. The work was to make it function as a hi-hat through sound design while keeping the texture of handwork. The entry for Best Engineered Album puts this sound-making itself forward for consideration.
Where the Music Has Traveled
Tracks from the album were used at New York Textile Month 2024 and, in 2025, at Premium Art Gallery Select Shop, an invitation-only VIP lounge at PARCO Shinsaibashi in Osaka.
