[Fully House] Talk Report — The cognitive behavior of sound (Homes That Nurture Life)
On August 6, 2026, founder Miyuki Tani spoke at Homes That Nurture Life, a talk event held in Shibuya, Tokyo, where professionals from different fields explored how homes and environments affect people. The venue was full. We thank everyone who came.
From Food, Clothing and Shelter to How We Hear
The theme of the event was homes that nurture life, and how deeply we are shaped by our environment. Tani spoke about what lies beneath food, clothing and shelter, including the home itself, which is how we perceive sound.
We live surrounded by countless sounds every day, yet we notice very few of them. Which sounds we pick up, and how we feel about them, depends on each person’s perception.
The Cognitive Behavior of Sound
At the center of the talk was an idea Tani calls the cognitive behavior of sound. When the way we perceive sound changes, our behavior changes. When our behavior changes, our daily life changes. Just as we shape our homes, shaping how we relate to sound can reshape life itself.
How the Talk Unfolded
It opened with a thirty-second exercise in which everyone counted the sounds they could hear in the room. Even in the same space, the number of sounds each person noticed was completely different.
From there, the talk moved through how people select, create and predict sound, the differences in ma she noticed while performing with musicians from more than 60 countries, her research in spatial acoustics, the relationship between sound and the body, water and skin, and the physics of sound. It closed with her own music.
Picturing the Future Inside Sound
The high point was a vision training exercise using sound. Participants let go with low tones, let themselves resonate with high tones, and then pictured the scene of the next morning.
Music can shape how we feel and act afterward, an effect known as musical priming. The exercise uses it to picture the life one wants in concrete terms.
